Those jackets look just like the Pace Car Jackets but they don't have the Yellow Patch.

Larry, I've actually considered repopping the Jacket, but I haven't found a jacket that looks close enough to the original to use!
I have already have the program made up for the patch on the back. Wink

Tony, I wish I could tell you that I forgot they gave me a jacket and it's in my closet. Frowner

Here's a story about first race day for you: At some point Randy went with me under the track (I think the queen had to go to the bathroom!). While we were in the tunnel it started raining and people wouldn't move on through. More people kept coming in and we were so squished that I was carried along a bit. It was frightening. Finally after some yelling, the crowd began to move. WHEW. us flag

Did I go fast? You bet. I don't know if I could possibly remember this correctly, but I know that at least once I when I was by myself near Farmersburg I "put the pedal to the metal." I would have been in big trouble had they known. As I recall, I thought I had the car up to 130. The last time I was able (because I was scared!!!) to look, I think the hand was all the way over. Rebel Queen. 2009 IPC

Randy will have his own story to tell about working at WTHI and hearing the state police (friends of his) on the radio.

This is probably my favorite photo -- 8X10 glossy --autographed first

Smiler

Thank you!

So!

Are you up for a ride in the old time machine??? Razzer

One of the nicest aspects of going through Jan's slides is the fact that you get a chance to see her a little more like the woman that Randy married opposed to the Queen that graced the 500 41 years ago. She was so much more relaxed when the queen's escort had the camera! Wink

Mrs.IDR......What do you think you are saying to Randy in this shot? Razzer

I've seen hundreds of images over the years and in almost everyone, Jan had the look of a Queen!
Some of these slides show the woman that was a Queen!

Tony, I like the last picture you posted. Great shot of the rear deck lid. What decal is posted on the deck lid? Looks like something in the center of the deck lid also. Looks like the boot cover is lying on the spare tire. Newspapers..

Oh, it's colder here than you think. Nice during the day, but fogged in by 5 pm and windy. Currently it is 61 outside and I'm only about 2 hrs north of Tony. Normal characteristics of the Pacific coast line. It's nothing like the Atlantic, but would rather be no place else.

I was a newsman working at WTHI one evening. We always had the police radios barking in the background. I'll insert here that the police beat was my responsibility so I knew loads of state troopers, sheriff's deputies and city police. Anyway, it was a relatively quiet evening and I heard someone on the radio say "Wow, did you see that?"

"Yeah, she was really moving."

"I clocked her at over 100."

"Hey . . . was that the pace car?"

Well, as the conversation unfolded I began to realize that a couple of troopers were talking about Jan in her pace car. Within seconds I was on the phone to the dispatcher.

"What's going on?"

"We think the queen is running her pace car on the unopened Interstate." (remember this was 1967 and they were still building Interstate 70 through Terre Haute.

Well, I had a combination of fear, anger, frustration, what's she thinking . . . a load of emotions going through my mind.

Within a half-hour, the dispatcher called me back laughing. Seems the whole thing was made up by a couple of the troopers and they did it on the car-to-car radio just to get me.

And, they did!
