Every original car I have looked at has the anti squeak mat placed here to quiet the spare in its mounted position.

Originally it was a tar papered mat that was placed in the trunk prior to going into oven 3.

Thanks. It must be a date or plant thing. My 11A Van Nuys convertible looks the same as Mike Rossi's 11B convertible. My 04A Van Nuys pacer had one like Phil shows.

Mike, thanks for the photo(s) post. Great shots (again). I may have seen the red car before but don't recall...
quote:
edited (portions omitted)...
... It was a design failure point that was engineered into the vehicle...
..."a design trap to hold moisture in order to rot the quarter panel out faster".
Phil thanks, that is a great story (although its moral is disappointing)...

I always wondered why the rear quarter drops seemed always rusted-out on older unrestored cars. Another '67 (rust bucket) came through the shop recently, allowing (once opened-up) a much closer look how it was pieced together. I was dumbfounded to see how the convergence of the trunk pan (open to the fender), wheel well, inner & outer quarters, all came together essentially creating a water bucket. With a hole plug for a finishing touch! My first reaction was basically "What a D.F. design!"... followed by "obviously these guys didn't have CAD yet" (20 years away). Your story gives me a different spin, I.E. "maybe they weren't so dumb after all"...

Add-on: MORE TRUNK PHOTOS
--------
From the golden oldies channel (so to speak): I remember there were several trunk photos here a long time ago, found them way back at page 17.

3 examples (all different). If I remember correctly I think Tom's blue car was Van Nuys, and the Hoffberger car from Norwood(?)

Mike,

I see the instillation on these Los cars but I am wondering about design and install intent being different. If the pad is oriented under the tire then the jack mount punch out matches the mount exactly. On the other hand if it is installed on the top then the circular edges match the drain holes.

Mufflers and heat... yea I get that theory, however if that was the reason I would really expect to see a designed heat shielding system between the muffler and the gas tank first.

And compare the cut angles at the example I posted (at the circular ends) against the examples that mike posted.

That’s a entirely different punch cut design.

in addition to the radius being circular on Design
#1 also on Design #2 end is also squared to a 90 degree angle at the top.

Finally look at the difference in cut curvature from top to bottom. Definite difference from end to end.

Phil, thanks for the add-ons. As always, some great points & observations! And thanks to everyone else contributing thoughts & inputs...

I think I'm going to open a separate spin-off thread to continue the discussion on the mats & insulation (for those who may be interested); but as a tangent discussion. LINK: ASPHALT TRUNK MATS

A couple take-backs & comments I'll synthesise here, to the extent they affect my intended direction:

1) One very good point Phil raises:
quote:
Mufflers and heat... yea I get that theory, however if that was the reason I would really expect to see a designed heat shielding system between the muffler and the gas tank first.

2) So... it would seem the orientation diffs must be a Norwood vs. L.A. thing? Maybe they missed the memo in L.A. about turning it sideways on convertibles?

3) Given that my car is L.A.-built, I'm inclined to leave things as they are. The photos seem pretty consistent in both cases (though small sample).

4) As for whether it is a sound deadener or a heat shield... Not really relevant to me considering #2-#3 above. I'm happy to defer on this to the experts. Point #1 above makes a lot of sense. There is a lengthy discussion on the CRG forums at LINK: Trunk sound deadner (and probably some other places). I do not know if they reached consensus.

5) Regarding differences in the asphalt mats, I think the angle of the photos makes them difficult to compare? I'll elaborate on this in the tangent discussion (including measurements). LINK: ASPHALT TRUNK MATS
