I love that photo!! I LOVE the color of the top in that photo. Tom, that would look cool to also be dressed up like that to a car show. Talk about playing the role! yea

I would love to get dressed up military style with a helmet and uniform. LOL Just like this! Big Grin

Charlie , I have some decals which are also from around 85. Could you please post some pics of what yours look like , also of the back side of the decal too?

Geoff,
You can see what Charley's decal looks like back on pg 12 of this thread at the bottom. It might be too late to see the back of his decal since it might be applied to his Pacer already.
His decal looks just like #92 and the ones in the these vintage pictures.

Tom , your right.

They appear to be 3M ones?

The onces I have from around 85 are not 3M and was curious if these were the same.

Maybe Charlie will confirm if the blue writing on the back is in fact 3M?

The current thinking on planned approach is:

1) Exterior nose stripes in enamel with Marina Blue (ChromaBase #4850K);
2) Pinstripes also based on the Marina Blue enamel; but tinted a little lighter such that the mix more closely resembles the Ditzler #13402 (Dupont #9331-LH);
3) Interior-- No enamel cross identified so use lacquers, Ditzler #13217 for dash top and #13379 for the rest of the interior.

Viewed samples of planned technique for the pinstripes yesterday. Mike from paint shop sprayed the same Marina Blue with higher air pressure, which was supposed to make the silver in the paint 'stand up' more (lighter finish). This sample shows the same Marina Blue sprayed at 30-35 PSI and 45 PSI side-by-side... The lighter tinted side is the higher pressure. Here you can see the difference...

...And here you can't... Optical illusion with the tape down the middle... Still Marina Blue 4850K on both sides...

I Gave the go-ahead to shoot the pinstripes using this technique.

Earlier research on the paint colors (discussed previously-- https://camaropacecars.com/eve/...733/m/2151016806/p/3 -- 03 November 2012 ) led me to conclude there was very minimal difference between the pinstripe color & Marina Blue... so little difference that from eyeball examination they looked the same to me. The pigments used in both colors are the same, just in slightly different proportions... the main differences being slightly more silver and more clear (which shouldn't affect color) in the #13402 mix (other differences nominal).

We have decided not to apply the door decals at this time. Just-in-case something gets bumped or dinged (hopefully not!) when car goes back to the restoration shop, possibly next week. If an accident happens we can have the door repaired without trashing a set of decals.

OK Here Goes... DASH TOP-- CHAPTER 6--
=============================================

As I had stated previously on 1/24/13-- This is probably going to be an unorthodox conclusion, considering there has been so much discussion on this site emphasizing the Suede additive... We found that the suede, at least in this particular formulation, caused us more problems with the sandpaper-like texture.

Here's the step by step procedure:

1) Urethane primer (U-POL, picture below)- medium coat- & let set.
2) Light Scotchbrite treatment to etch primer. Scotchbrite #7447 RED.
3) Clean with tack cloth
4) Wax & grease remover (Dupont solvent)
5) Spray color #13217 (Ditzler/PPG Duracryl Lacquer) Dark Bright Blue-- Specially mixed OMITTING THE SUEDE. Lacquer thinner 1.5 parts to 1 part paint. Flattener added since suede was omitted.

The primer base and Scotchbrite treatment gives just enough texture to closely resemble the original finish.

-------------------
As I stated before: I would strongly suggest trialing this technique on a scrap metal or something before applying it to an actual car-- multiple iterations of trial & error were involved in getting to this point.

Here's the #13217 (Ditzler/PPG Duracryl Lacquer) Dark Bright Blue... The formula calls for Suede additive but in this special mix they left it out... all other pigments & quantities still the same:

Looks great. I think it would be hard to improve on what you have accomplished. That is how I am going to have my dash painted.
