Hello gents; I wanted to post a quick note acknowledging the welcome messages. Many thanks to all. It is an honor to be welcomed into this very exclusive fraternity. I feel a little like Rip Van Winkle must have felt when he awoke after a long sleep. So much high quality information is now available through the network of owners and other interested parties. When I originally sent my car info. to USCC and ICC in 1989 this is the sort of networking I hoped would evolve. I guess it really took the Internet to make this all possible. Charley. You had mentioned about discussing the nuances of restoring an LA car that isn't a Norwood built Indy car.. Well a few members here also have LA build units to follow and as luck would have it the survivorish car I bought from your neck of the woods is an LA car as well.. Charlie, there are several differences between the NOR and LA cars. The LA cars had a separate short 12" wiring harness extension that the NOR cars didn't receive. It made it easier for assembly line workers to plug into with out leaning over as far. To my knowledge the LA cars did not receive the PTB firewall markings. I'm sure there are other differences. If you have a specific question contact me and maybe I can help you out or take a picture of my car and send it to you for reference. Nice to see another car being resurrected. | |||

Thanks all for the offers of assistance, Q&A, etc. I am particularly interested in making contact with owners of 04D Van Nuys cars to compare notes. Please PM me about this or reply through the Owner's section... Not sure where to start on this (so much history!) so here goes... will try to keep it short... as best I can... Purchased my 04D Van Nuys car in 1975 during my senior year of high school. I was 16 at the time. Car was my daily commuter up through my sophomore year of college. (WOW-- what a fun car to drive!!!) Had to park it in 1978 for mechanical reasons, but still drove it a couple more times through 1979. Car's history is rather colorful. I did a lot of background research during the 1987-1989 timeframe, including a complete title history from Arizona DMV. It was also during this timeframe I originally sent tag info. to U.S. Camaro Club and International Camaro Club (both now defunct); who at the time were in early stages of forming the original Pace Car registry. Car is listed in the 1992 Crispino & Hooper Indy Pace Car Book-- it's in the page 51 table of Van Nuys cars, second from bottom of table (the last one listed of the 04D cars). The car is a 4N car (396/325). I'm owner #6 (not counting dealers). Car was originally delivered to Courtesy Chevrolet of Phoenix AZ on 5/9/1967. It was sold to original owner on 5/25/67, then repossesed by bank and retitled back to dealer 7/3/67. I have spoken to owners #2, #3, #4, and #5. No success in ever locating owner #1 (but still trying). Owner #2 modified the engine extensively for racing, and fabricated a unique 425 HP specification plate that was attached under the hood. For many years I thought it had something to do with a dealer prep package such as Nickey, Yenko, etc., until I finally spoke to owner #2 who solved the mystery. Several of the other owners spoke of major engine problems, i.e. blown engines, mostly from racing, and axle problems. Another interesting finding, at least half of the 6 owners (myself included) acquired the car as teenagers in high school or shortly after. Car had been used as a drag racer by previous owners, with a replacement 396 engine pretty much used up by the time I bought it. So, in 1976 at age 17 (still in High School) I swapped out the burned-out, rods-knocking, already-replaced-once 396 with a fresher hi-perfomance 350 (that engine is still in the car in the video). Couple years later (maybe 1980?) replaced the very damaged front clip with pristine front clip from a parts car I had also acquired along the way (explains the black stripe). Life went on 1980-2011 but still kept the car all these years as it had always been my objective to restore it to its original glory-- I just put it on the back burner and kind of forgot about it as life went on; taking it with me from place to place a couple times when I moved. It struck me sometime in December 2011, that the car had by then been sitting in same place in my garage for 20 YEARS. This motivated me (finally!) to do SOMETHING with it: dabbled briefly with the idea of selling it, but spending so much time on the car preparing it for sale sort of reawakened my interest... I realized I wasn't ready to part with it yet. Also I realized I am not getting any younger, so might as well move forward with the project! In the meantime I had also been researching and interviewing with a number of restoration shops and individuals, locally & elsewhere. One of my main considerations was wanting the project done by somebody who REALLY KNEW CAMAROS!! I had the good fortune to make the acquaintance of a local guy by the name of John Bauler. John is the main man behind Arizona Camaro Restoration Specialists, who I eventually chose to take on the project. John is also the president of the First Generation Camaros of Arizona Car Club. (He also has a '67 RS convertible and a '69 SS350 convertible for daily drivers and is currently restoring a '67 Z28 for his own collection). We moved my car to John's shop on April 27. He and his team have been swarming over the car ever since (it goes to sandblaster Friday!). I'm really confident that after waiting all these years, finally found the right guy for the job! Hey Charlie its great to see you and your car found their way back home. Great story about the history. It's also very fortunate you did your Ownership research way back when you did. Sadly many owners like myself missed this opportunity to do this. Unfortunately we may never know all the missing links like you do. I know many of your questions shall be answered by the combined knowledge of other owners here. You can't get this accurate information anywhere else. The floor boards and trunk pan are in amazing condition. I thought after you had it blasted it would have had a little more rust based on the pictures of your quarters. I can't wait to see the other photos. | |||
