Double check AIM there are part number changes for these. When I can blow some cobwebs off of my brain I'll dig everything up again. It was posted on the site at one time.

To address some of the questions brought up:

The only rivet part number in the AIM is 3899834 on Sheet B4 of UPC Z22. It is for the headlight doors. The revision history shows a previous part number replaced on 6-10-66, well before production.

I have 4 used 67 grilles (flat), one NOS 68 grille assembly and another 68 that was assembled from the 3 NOS pieces over 20 years ago. Below are pictures of all but the one I assembled.

And from all this:

The headlamp doors appear to use the same flathead rivets seen on four of the five grilles I have pictured. The AIM supports the same rivet being used on the doors no matter what time of year they were produced. I have 7 pairs of doors with these rivets.

Four of the grilles I have use flathead rivets that appear to be the same as the doors. Of those four, one I know for sure is from an early Norwood car. The NOS one was a later over the counter replacement. The fifth one still attached to the lower valance is from a November built LA car. This one has oval head rivets. It looks like the same oval head rivets were used to attach the lower grille molding to the valance. These rivets may have been installed after the car left the plant and before the time I bought it in 1988. I had purchased what appear to be the same rivets to assemble NOS parts in the 88 time frame. I still have that assembly for comparison. I also just bought a batch of rivets like these hoping they were the ones to use to for a correct looking assembly. Looking at the flathead rivets on the others, those are the ones I am looking at having custom made.

I can't claim for sure what is "correct" from this data set, but the flathead rivets appear to have a lot of evidence they should be used.

I look forward to other input on this topic before I drop a rather large investment on buying 10,000 of the flathead rivets.
