Thought it would make a good post if I were to include everyone in the assembly of my engine. I've got it back from the machine shop and at this point the engine is buttoned up but not dressed. In the 67 IPC world the 350/Glide combination is the most popular so I was thinking that if I were to use myself as the example this time we would all have a template to follow for restoring our engines correctly. As some of you know, I received my car with the engine taken apart. Sadly the person that disassembled it lost all of the small pieces. I'm lucky enough to have the original main pieces like block, heads, intake , pan, distributor, carb(maybe)and internals. Every single small part is long gone including the nuts, bolts and brackets.
I'm thinking that if we take this in stages we could work up to a correct finished product or as correct as is reasonable. I'll pull all my numbers and list every component in three catagories: #1 original to the car #2 found, correctly dated vintage parts & #3 reproduction.
These pictures show each side on the motor as it sits now. My immediate goal is to make sure the hardware, plugs etc. are correct and also to get a list from you guys of what exactly the engine had on it during painting.(water necks, plug wire towers etc.) Once I get the painting accomplished we can go to the next level of dressing it with correct parts.I Hope to get some honest feedback from you guys even if things turn out needing to be redone or replaced.I chose to gasket the engine with modern gaskets and goop so as to not have a leaker. I will dress the gaskets as best I can to give an illusion of originality ( a tough decision but I need my car to last a good long time!). I am not sure about any of the plugs in the block and will need someone with a complete(unrebuilt original) engine to fill me in on whats correct or not.

Tom,

Do you have Colvin's book "CHEVY BY THE NUMBERs 65-69"? I am assuming that your engine is from Flint? There is a chart on page 56 that shows the engine assembly order. It also mentions where in the process paint is applied for both Tonowanda and Flint. The big difference in the exhaust manifolds.

Mike. yes I do but that list leaves my small questions unanswered. For example:How was the engine supported during painting, was the flexplate installed at the time a flywheel would have been? how did they tape off the open holes (carb, dist, spark plugs, dip stick tube, vacuum fitting, senders?) It lists the brackets for the plug wires being put on after paint..how is that when the intake bolts are already torqued down? Are there stud bolts in some positions for the intake? if so..where? Did they mask off the chrome valve covers or did the engine have shields in place for paint? When did the accessory drive (pulleys) and brackets get installed? How is it that the block stamping on the right side is machined clean of paint? did they wipe it clean? When were the water nipples installed? Did the exhaust manifolds really have French locks? I have original pix without them?

Tom,

We'll have to get our heads together and hammer these out. I don't have a good "survivor" example to work from anymore and you've got my photos. But I am sure that we can work through this.

Yea.. I suppose being systematic and just figuring what needs to be on the engine for painting is a good first step..I have been looking at your pics quite a bit but some with AC and biglocks and LA builds make it a little tough to be absolutely sure. It's the April, Norwood, powerglide non ac non a.i.r. variable that I want to be sure on. The venting system will be sticky I predict as well. Give me some ideas.

Weavolino..It does but my concern will be the correctness of the intake bracket(the bolt that holds the bracket to the intake & which if any has orange paint/bracket coloring?), the part # of the pcv, the markings of the hose and the correct head markings for the block vent(block vent color/orange, white cad, gray phosphate etc)..stuff like that. When the time comes I'll post a pic of all the parts I have so we can hash it out correctly..ps got the stick and tube but thanks.
