It's not a great picture for seeing him, but that's Harlan wearing his trademark hat behind the wheel of #92.

Thanks for pic of Fengler. Yes, I remember that hat!

The picture of Al Unser was taken at the Terre Haute track June 11. I was asked to come. Should have made that clear. I just don't remember what was going on with a GUN!

Bobby Unser and Greg Weld won races there. Don't know why I have photo with Al and his weapon. Al must have won too since he also has a lei but the newspaper article only mentions the other too.

Jan,
The stories & pictures that are posted is VERY interesting ,but more importantly a part of American History. Have you considered writing a book on your life? BTW Im going to rate this thread 5 stars!

Thanks Michael, I was afraid you guys would be disappointed I didn't have more pics of the car. It's too bad we can't find the one of the key fob.

From the Festival Program. Is it possible that Jans picture is in the 1968 Festival program?

You guys won't believe who I just talked to. Tony Habeeb sent me a link to her phone number--June Swango! She's 89 and sounds wonderful. Her health is good and so is her mind!

She seemed so happy to hear from me and said she'd never forget the night I was crowned. I think that was her husband, Mort who escorted me at the coronation. I told her I wouldn't ever forget how surprised I was. "I was so sure one of the tall blonds would win." You know what she said? "You talked your way into it. You were good at it." I laughed when she said it but admit it was a little deflating. Frowner

June and I had some great talks going back and forth from Terre Haute to Indy. She is quite a lady. She worked for Tony Hulman -- for the Speedway until around the time he died she told me. Mort died 18 years ago.

She doesn't have any memorabilia any more and doesn't remember giving her director's car to me. She said she had one to drive as well.

What a sweet ride this is. Again.

Thank you again, Tony.

Jan for sure we are mad about the "CAR" but to relive the period through you is an awesome experience. Its a treat to read your stories and look at your pics , My favourite pic is the one which has you and your sister in the "CAR" and in the back bround you can see into the shop. The events going on during this period are so cool yea

Jan,

Welcome aboard! Its awesome to have you here! Smiler

Not sure if you missed this question or don't recall any of these cars at the festivities....

quote:
Did you ever recall seeing any pace cars driving around with a Blue convertible top (likely would have to be up for you to notice it) instead of the normal white top cars? These are the cars we call "Blue Toppers".

They looked a little different as they had black nose stripes, a blue top, and mag wheel hubcaps that looked sort of like match box car wheels. The Zone guys and certain officials drove these... Here's a picture of one that Tony has shared. Smiler
