I'm looking at a 93 pace car to go with my pace truck, the car is a hardtop. Does anyone know how many of these were made without t-tops? Thanks

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe there were 125 hardtops, not 145.

I personally have no idea of the actual number of hardtops built. Would really be nice to see some sort of documentation on the number of hardtops versus t-tops, if such documentation existed. While the t-tops may have been more popular. The rarity of the hardtops, for me personally, offsets the difference. When either is shown at car shows, the public seems to enjoy both models equally. Whether they are t-tops, or hardtops, makes no difference to the vast majority of car enthusiasts. Either body style, of a pristine '93 pace car, draws just as much attention as the other.

There were 158 hardtop pace cars built in 1993.This number was displayed in several locations in 93 when the cars were introduced and I have seen it on several signs that owners had with their cars back then and I am sure it was also the number noted when the 93 travelled with the Legends Tour way back when.

You know, the 158 does sound quite familiar. Maybe that is correct. What I don't understand is why we always see listings for 645 Pace Cars but then you sometimes see 633. I asked Scott Settlemire about this and his explanation didn't make sense. So what is it, 645 or 633?

Now I can throw a wrench into the fan. The website compnine.com will tell you what RPOs were available on which VIN number cars from 1990 on up. I put in a VIN for a 93 pace car and it came back stating that 653 cars had the B5A RPO code and when I checked for how many had B5A and CC1, I get 489. 489 from 653 is 164! There are 6 more cars listed as hardtops then was just mentioned (158) and there are 8 more cars than the 645. Anybody care to explain that? I've spoken with the guys at compnine.com before and was informed that they have all the records direct from GM. Any ideas.

What about the three real pace cars. The others could have been prototypes or show cars?

OK....I'm not sure how many 1993 pace cars were built without T-tops but I know there were over 100. 158 does sound like a familiar number to me also....Now as far as how many pace cars were built: There were 633 total US production cars which includes 625 for track use and dealer distribution PLUS 8 for Chevrolet's INTERNAL use cars. These 8 cars were used as the ACTUAL pace car, 2 backup cars, and 5 prototype display cars (PUBLIC RELATIONS).There were also 20 Canadian pace cars. That gives you the 645 total production cars and with the other 8 gives you the 653 number.

Yeah, maybe that's how Scott explained it. Seeing it in print is easier to understand than just hearing the numbers and trying to calculate it and remember it.

So, of the 645 that we all have heard about, only 633 were SOLD in the US. The remaining 8 were GMs. That makes sense. So then the question remains on how many of them were dealer SOLD that were ttops? 158? Could the other 6 mentioned on compnine.com be part of GMs stable?

OK.Now that the debate is heating up I went and dug out my box's of files relating to old International Camaro Club files and records from when the Ontario Camaro Club was a chapter way back when.I read them late last night in the garage and these were compiled from direct access to the GM files.I was a little off when I said 158 were hardtops. My apologies as it was actually 156 for sure.Total production will be where it becomes confusing.645 is the total number that were made available for sale through GM dealers. To break this down it goes like this 125 sent to Indy (Bill Estes prepped)for official track duties in May later sold through GM dealers as what we now call festival cars.500 for retail sale through US GM dealers and a further 20 prepped with Canadian package to be sold through Canadian GM dealers. The 3 official pace cars are not included in this list as they were not legal for street use. There were a further 8 cars listed that GM had for internal use the fate of which is unknown to me although I do have the VIN numbers for them somewhere along with the VIN's for the 3 official cars and the 20 Canadian cars. There is also a widely published list with the 125 festival car VIN's.These 8 internal use cars would make it plausable that the website compnine.com shows a total of 653 cars produced with the B5A package. Now who knows what has happened to these 8 cars. Are they the infamous show circuit and advertising cars that had not for public sale or not legal for highway use or something like that on the drivers door decals???????I also have an article on the people who purchased the last Canadian car at the time #20 and another on the last production car #645 which has all the GM documentation stating that it is the last production car. With this documentation for car #645 it is plausable to assume the 8 missing cars were likely distroyed by GM once their useful duties were completed.I believe I also have an article that gives some information about the earliest produced cars which might be this 8 but I have to dig deeper to find it.At one time I believe there was a car at some shows that had this door decal that was rumoured to be the display car from the Indianapolis Airport from May 1993.I believe Scott Settlemire once saw this car at a show and was very surprised that it had escaped from GM.I saw it back in 2007 at Indy I believe and a member of this site might actually own it.Lee can you provide any help with this. Its VIN might match the missing 8 list????

You are thinking of Larry's #78.

If you find those 8 Vins I will run a car fax on them and we can see what became of those.

Yes...This car was #2 in sequence built of the 645 total (US & Canadian combined). It was assigned to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway but Don't know for what purpose. My car was next in production sequence... The #1 car was built for Jim Perkins. He said that his was the only one built with a 6 speed transmission.

I think I'm going to go down and get an estimate on putting an aftermarket sunroof in my '93. No matter how many t-tops were made, or how many hardtops were made. I'll have the only sunroof '93. I wonder if Auto Zone can do the job for me, or maybe JC Whitney carries them. I'm going to go do a search. Big Grin
