Hello Tony
I am not sure it is or isn't a 396,
when the owner before me got the car it had
the BB crossmember and mounts, along with that it has
an M-21 that matches the VIN. So based on
that I had heard/read that the M-21 in 67 was
only in the Z28 or L78.

In either case - 350 or 396 - it now has a 396
along with associated parts, heater box, mounts
6k tach etc.

So at this point I know it is not the original engine
and it is a great looking and running car, so it is what
it is. Once spring rolls around in Montana it should
be out and about.

Take Care Steve

Probably was a 350 car but you may want to keep the dialog going in any case since she now has all the other common Big Block goodies!
It's an awesome ride either way you cut it!!!

Does your Camaro have the tach/gauge set up?
If so, where does the red line start on your tach? I believe the Z28 and L78 had the 6000 rpm tach and the 350 and L35 396 had the 5500 rpm tach.

It has been my understanding that the big block cars had a 3/8th's inch fuel line from the gas tank

One way that you can check to see if the frame was always a big block frame is by the fuel line routing. The hole that is marked is only used on small block cars. When the frame is used for a big block the fuel line is routed around the motor mount as shown in this pic so that the fuel line doesn't get to close to the exhaust manifold. If the frame has thread marks on the hole it was a small block frame. If the hole is a smoothe punched hole it was a big block frame. If the frame is not original to the car this will not help you.

That's just the way it is when you still have an old photo and don't have the negative anymore. Time and water are not good to old photos. Frowner
