To clarify in '67 they had a "SS 350" cap, they just didn't have a "SS" only cap. So a SS 350 should have the "SS 350" cap and a SS 396 should have the "Camaro" cap (Also the N30 Deluxe wheel only came with the blue bowtie cap).

http://www.camaros.org/swheel.shtml#67

"Three different horn caps were used with the standard steering wheel and the custom interior steering wheel. For base, Z28, and SS396 cars, the standard "Camaro" horn button was used. SS350 models received the "SS-350" horn button, and RPO Z22 Rally Sport cars received the "RS" horn button. If the car was equipped with both the Z28 and RS options, the "RS" cap was used. If the car was equipped with both the RS and SS350 options, the "SS-350" cap was used. Whereas if the car was equipped with both the RS and SS396 options, the standard "Camaro" cap was used." yes.. but i see room for a tweak to that possibly:

If by the time the smallblock pacers were made.. the ones that recieved the chrome 3 spoker ( my C-1 and the hugneys O-1 ) didn't they long since ditch the SS350 emblems for the gas cap and the grill... if so maybe they ditched the horn cap as well at that change period? so that the correct center would just be " Camaro " or maybe even just "SS " ?

I'm askin not tellin checkered flag

Lakin... you treating my Pats good out there?

Well of course it may depend on who's running things at the time, but I don't think they ever paid to have vendors make stuff and then just threw it out.
Case in point, 1974 Z-28 graphics. They were batch ordered all at once in one order. They were supposed to be on a clear substrate so the color of the car showed through, but due to an error in ordering they were printed on a white substrate (So they only looked "as designed" on a white Z-28). They did not toss them and re-order, used them as-is and incorrect.
So I would think that they would have just used up whatever they had and didn't order any more. So it is possible that once they knew the SS 396 was coming on line they stopped ordering the SS 350 stuff and may have used it all up by the time the pacers were built. An analogy would be the metal to plactic seat back change. When the metal ones of a certain color were gone they phased in the platic of that particular color.
When it comes to mass production they split hairs over fractions of pennies.

As for your Pats, Indy is pulling out all the stops to make this the best Super Bowl ever for the teams and the fans. Truely incredible what they've done here downtown. However the Pats aren't real popular here and of course there is the Manning connection. So most of Indy is being nice to the Pats, but pulling for the Giants to win, SORRY!

strong point.. if i got a mini horn cap contract I'd blast out a billion of them in one run.. I like that

Pats literally have 24/7 TV coverage here in Boston so i see all your offerings from the Track to the ZIP line.. I understand why youse Indy guys don't love us.. I'm cool with that

Below is a copy of a page from the January 67 Canadian Camaro Master Parts catalogue showing the horn parts. This is a list that includes post SS396 release information.

This lists a separate but unique SS96 horn button. As a point of reference, my 04A NOR IPC has an SS350 horn button.

Did a quick search of those parts numbers. The ONLY pertinent horn cap link for that 3914890 SS 396 cap that came up was a CRG post.

http://www.camaros.org/forum/i...hp?topic=5907.0;wap2

"Joe,

Although I did find a part number for a "SS 396" horn cap from a July, 1967 issue of a GLEN MITCHELL COLLISION ESTIMATOR (P/N 3914890), I couldn't find any reference to that number in any of my manuals. No other GM reference material I have show this number as being valid. Not even the 1971 Price Schedule (which shows all the other caps), so it may have been something that was considered, but never actually released.

Ed"

Searches for the other P/Ns turned up various ebay auctions and repo parts catalog links. So it looks to me like that never made production.

Big block production was part year, and not a huge number built. May have decided that with all the other variations they had on hand they weren't going to run out and had enough plain Camaro ones to cover the big blocks. Didn't want the expense of tooling up and producing yet another variation and then just make a relatively limited number of them. Makes a lot of sense if you think about it.

Out of curiosity I looked through our owners photos. Of the pictures where they have steering wheels and you can tell which one I spotted 4 with the Z87 Custom interior steering wheel. Mike Rossi and Steve Swain both big blocks and have the "Camaro" cap. The other two are Jim Hairston and our own Bill Bradley which both have the "SS 350" cap.

You know I just realized I've been going on about horn caps in a gas cap/grille emblem thread. Oops!
Can't find any specifics date wise, just that when the SS 396 option was introduced in January they changed the gas caps/emblems and took the 350 off. I would imaging the vendors stopped making the 350 ones, and started producing the SS only and they used up the 350 stuff on the small block cars until it was gone. We've had this discussion before as I recall speculating they spent their money on the gas cap and grille emblems and let the horn cap go.
I also recall my speculation on the early flat-bottomed SS grille emblem. The posts are not centered top-to-bottom and therefore you can't vertically center the emblem in the grille, it's off center high. Then one day it dawned on me, if the 350 was still beneath the SS it would be perfectly centered. They had just welded-up/modified the original tool(s) and filled that portion of the mold rather than the time and expense of remaking brand new tools from scratch.
Old pictures don't show any pacers with SS350 gas caps, they'd probably used up all of the 350 ones in the almost 4 months since they most likely stopped making those.

I just looked through the old Norwood Zone/Cinci Zone Documents that I have gathered and sure enough-there is the information on the SS-396. To top that off I just met with and interviewed the Zone Manager from that period who is still alive. He is now 93 and still very clear in his memory.

I am a bit confused as to what is actually being discussed here in this thread-can somebody do a summary and I will see what I have to support the discussion. Cheers
