SS trim tag on an original RS Camaro

If you think things are perfect off the GM assembly line check this out. I was looking through the Camaro section and saw a 67 RS Convertible on eBay #(220865823278) the trim tag had a "4P" on it. I thought who would want to changed the Camaro to a RS instead of keeping it a SS/RS like the trim tag said. The documentation shown on the POP showed the engine code (ME) to be a 327/210hp. So I thought that maybe it was really a L30/M20, 327/275hp engine 4-spd and that would explain why it got a 4P designation, but the POP clearly says "ME" for the engine code. So I decided to email the owner about it. He said the original owner ordered a 350 4-spd Camaro, but while waiting for the Camaro he changed his mind because the daughter would be driving the Camaro and it would be too much for her so he had a 327 with Powerglide put in place instead. I thought it was a great story and it shows how things get changed during an order and still be GM original. Very cool!

Are you theorizing with the evidence at hand here that the dealer called and cancelled the SS option after the process began? Is the mans story convincing and compelling enough for you to believe?... I'd like to hear a whole lot more of the specifics of this in light of the people I now know and can discuss anomolies like this with..

Excellent....thanks for finding this Spin

Hi Tom,
No I wasn't theroizing at all. I was actually trying to find some reason for the anomoly. I was prepared to hear that there was another motor in the Camaro and that someone stamped it with the original VIN. It wasn't the current owners story I found convincing, although, it is an interesting story, but the documentation on the POP is what makes this anomoly more convincing to me. In this world where most people would want to make a quick buck and change a trim tag or restamp a motor to make a Camaro something more than it is would make more sense to me, but to see a down grade to a lesser engine with documentation for it piqued my interest more on this Camaro. If this Camaro didn't have it's original engine in it or have it's POP I would question the story and originality and also say it didn't follow the standard protocol of GM, but it's hard to argue with documentation. The owners story just answered my question and gave me the reason for the anomoly. It would have been neat if there was a written piece of documentation from the original owner for this change. Just my two cents! Smiler

Smedley's... I have been there. Big old dealership-lots of Camaro's sold there over the years. That car would have been loaded onto the Anchor freight truck and right to Smedleys. Within 2 hours of leaving plant. Big Grin

I love it Tom.. Just want to super double check everyones thoughts before I keep this car in my thoughts as an example for the future.. I agree it is what it claims to be! very very cool and I bet having been ordered from a dealer so close by they might have even had an " in ' at the plant.. This car was certainly changed at a very narrow and specific time in the build.. Like the tag was made----the change came in---and the car went down the line! excellent.

I bet NOT something a far away dealer could have been able to accomplish confused

I would love to see this Camaro get judged and see what the judges would do in a situation like this. It is all original, but with one very interesting anomoly. Everything is correct on this Camaro except for the "4P" on the trim tag. I don't know much about judging, but wonder if the judges would look at the POP during judging?

Not the place for this discussion I realize but with regards to judging.. I had a few conversations this year with quite a few very respected people in the Camaro world and the general consensus is that " judging " in the official sense has pretty much died out.. there is ISCA that judges for cleaniness and awesomeness and crowd appeal. There are local shows that judge basically the same way with a decent grasp of the word " stock " and then there is the ever waning " big for real judging " for lack of a better word. That aspect has all but been discredited since the world smartened up and realized the same guys building the cars were judging the cars and the older guys minds are totally closed to new, abstract and realistic qualities...a next phase in Camaro resto of sorts...This is also the sole reason for the hobbies polarization of the last 1/2 decade

I'm hopeful that when its all declared dead a new crowd will fill in the gaps with entirely new parameters.. something fresh for those that want to be validated in that way... which at times can be very fun and satisfying Razzer

Shaking the egomaniacs and the guys in it for the money is the uphill battle that may never be won

Tom,
You mean 1-24-67? Or 12-4-67?
