This is very exciting to hear the news on this car.
Can I ask what information was found, if any? what does the - mean before l181A?
Not very long ago I was about to give up on this car accepting it for what it was.
Thanks for the encouragement to keep going forward.

Dave , unfortunately there is no 100% known correct answer to what the - and also the L181A code stand for.

It is known that not all pace cars had the fleet codes on their tags.

FYI - there are many other known fleet codes found on pace cars other than the L181A.

It is generally acknowledged it a a fleet code to do with the ordering process but what exactly the L181A and the other codes actually mean is still unknown , your car throws more questions into the arena as well rather than clearing anything up 100%.

The - is found on all pace cars with or without the fleet codes , yet another unproven thing.

Tony from here can usually offer the most logical reasoning behind these codes to any I have ever heard.

Dave , you need to chase down the history and previous owners of this car as soon as you can. Try to find out the original owner or seller as well as every owner up to you and there may be answers there. Good luck and keep us posted with anything you find.

GEOFF,

I have contacted the dealer where the car came from in new mexico and they have been very open to help me.

The person I have been speaking to was excited to hear about the car and told me the dealership has been involved with racing forever, He told me he actually built the gear boxes for the cars and he also mentioned that their driver won the 1992 indy 500 race. So they definitely have some history with the pace cars. I sent you or Tony a picture of the dealer emblem.

I'm also persuing the local newspapers at the time to find out what I can and as soon as any info comes my way I will share it.
Thank's

I meant to respond to the comment about the trim tag appearing to have white paint on it. There is no white paint on it whatsoever. I took the picture in the middle of the day and what you are seeing is the reflection from the sun.
It does appear to have a white cast.

Also can someone tell me what the Q116 and the 2068 numbers represent on the trim tag?

Best bet it to check out this site to decode the cowl tag.
www.camaros.org

More specifically:
http://camaros.org/numbers.shtml#CowlTag

And be sure to check out:
http://camaros.org/bodynumbering.shtml

The Van Nuys and Los Angeles plants differed in the fact that at Van Nuys they only built F-bodies (Camaros and Firebirds). At the Los Angeles plant they built cars other than just the F-bodies. So some of the numbers on a "LOS" cowl tag are rather unique.

In the Los Angeles plant the Q116 is thought to be a body scheduling code with each letter corresponding to a production day. So this car was scheduled to be the 116th built on the 17th production day of the month. The 2068 is the body sequence number so it would be (LOS) the 2068th 12667 (Convertible with custom interior) body built that year. The numbers do seem to fall into line somewhat. We have a 04D L181A car with body number 1953. Assuming production Monday through Friday (all me in this assumption) the 17th production day would be the 23rd of May making it in the 4th week of the month or 05D. The body number does seem a little questionable since it would indicate they only built 120 more 12667 Camaros the whole rest of the model year when they built 115 from April to May. But it's the best we've got for now and maybe forever.

MIKE,

Thanks for the info, Hopefully I have the equation correct.
Ok their is a 67 pacer 4 sale on hendricks motor sports that was built 04B. 2nd week of april. Production #H479, the 479th car built to date with deluxe interior on the 8th production day, which means april 12th. car # 1876

hendricks motor sports car 04B #1876
your car 04D two weeks later #1953
My car 05D one month later #2068

So they built aprox. 77 cars in two weeks in april and aprox. 115 in 4 weeks in may with some production days left.

The numbers don't seam to far off.

It's unreal how much time you guys have invested in the research of these cars.

Thank You!

The credit for that info goes to CRG, Camaros Research Group, www.camaros.org. They have by far amassed the largest database of first gens to be able to draw those types of conclusions. Many other groups benefit from their painstaking research. We don't always totally agree with them in some aspects when it comes to the pace cars, but I don't believe they ever narrowly focused their attention to just pace cars like we do here, more the much broader entire first gen info. Thanks to Phil (festival) and the Norwood reunion/thread (and Tom too), we may be finally able to confirm some of our thoughts/conclusions when it comes to pace car production.

EDIT: BTW, if you did check out the body numbering page (3rd link I posted), note they said the last KNOWN 12667 built (#2188)they have data on, so it is likely that there were more.

I've been to Salt Lake and skied at Snobird.. great area.. that Kennecott Copper Mine is amazing.
Be sure to know that you will submit all of your info to the CRG and they will give you answers to your questions but not elaborate.. that may frustrate you so be preparred for that. I for one cannot tolerate things of that nature. Just don't want you to expect too much Roll Eyes

TOM,

I'm content on where I am. I don't see any need to pursue anything else. You guys have been very informative and have given me encouragement to keep pushing forward.

If there is any info distributed it will be by you except what I release in my search to find out more history on my car. I have allready referred several people to the site.

The way I see it is this is a win win situation for both of us regardless how my car checks out.

I'm glad you enjoyed salt lake why you were here.

Tom,
I just finished putting my car back together, Front fender, inner fender, hood and the grill between the hood and the windshield. What a project to get to the hidden serial number below the wiper motor.
I also installed the door decals and pin strips. I'm headed up to snowbird to take some pictures this next weekend, weather permiting and once I'm done I'll post them.

Thanks

I just saw this previous exchange from Sept. 2011. I don't remember where I heard this, but I do remember coming across info. someplace that the dash code signified "Delete Stripe" (i.e. special paint). Normally the stripes would be either white or black depending on body color. So the "normal" stripe would be deleted, and later the car would get special paint (i.e. blue stripe).

I have a box of old ICC and USCC club magazines from the late 1980's-early 1990's... will dig through these and see if maybe something in there substantiates this explanation. This will take awhile, give me a little time. Thx/CM

TOM,
I'm in the process of switching my hood back to stock and once thats done I'm going to post all my pictures along with a brief history of the car and the jouney it's been to find out what history I have uncovered. Is it ok to start a new topic or just continue with the old one?
I can't believe how much the appearance of this car changed once I installed the new door decals and pin stripes.

Thanks
