Hey, I have a 1982 pace car as well, but I am having trouble with the serial number, I know most of what the vin means, it has a 305 - 165 hp crossfire engine.. What my question to everyone is that, the production number doesnt make any sense.. From what I understand there was only 6320 of these cars made, my vin number is: 1G1AP8773CL144123.. According to the build sheet that I have, in which matches the serial number, what is the actual production number? The guy I bought it from says that it was the 123rd car made, but dooesnt make sense to a vin decoder, also the build sheet says that it is an indy special, should it say that it is a pace car replica from the indy 500?? the car does have a complete sticker package, and all the options that the original pace car had, less the 4 wheel disc brakes.. The interiors match as well.. Please help me decode this car!?

The only way to know for sure is to look at the trim tag riveted to the radiator support. If the trim codes "26G 16U 16L" are listed, it's one of the 6360 replicas made.

I really have no idea on the production number and I'm not sure anyone else will either. There is no clear production documentation from back then.

That said -- given the last six of your VIN being 144123 and from what I've seen around -- I would think yours is a mid-to-late build.

The festival cars were all in the VIN range of CL122xxx to CL128xxx, and ones I've seen for sale in recent years range anywhere 130320 to 157072.

Assuming (and that's a big assumption) the cars were built even across the VIN range I've seen, that would put yours somewhere in the middle.

Again, I've no idea how many cars were built in a given run, but maybe someone else on the board does.
