Here is a senior moment I had regarding the 2002 Brickyard 400 and Bill Elliott. Back a couple years ago a local hardware store that is owned by Ralph Jones (a former NASCAR driver) had Bill Elliot there signing autographs one Saturday afternoon. Knowing Bill won the 2002 Brickyard 400 I got my 2002 35th Anniversary Camaro out of the garage and headed toward the hardware store to get him to autograph my car. I got half way there before it hit me that my 2002 35th Anniversary Camaro was actually the 2001 Brickard Pace Car and not the pace car in 2002, the year Bill won. I was glad I realized that before I asked him to sign a 2001 Brickyard car! That would have been kind of weird. (Jeff Gordon won in 2001)!!!!!

He use to stop in at the hardware store (Jones HWI Hardware, Upton Kentucky)that Ralph Jones owns anytime he came through town. Quite often during the week of the Brickyard 400, but I have not heard of him being in town the past couple years. Ralph told me that he and Bill got to be pretty good friends back in Bill's and Ralph's early days of racing in NASCAR, mid/late 70's early 80's. Ralph built his cars himself in his garage, hauled them to the track behind his pickup, put together a volunteer pit crew, and managed to make it into a number of Daytona 500's back at that time. A local furniture store usually gave him a little sponsorship money. Now he just runs the hardware store and builds a spec house every now and then.
